A note about homeowner's...

insurance. Don't fall into the trap of thinking homeowner's insurance covers the normal wear and tear on your home. HOI's purpose is to protect against the large losses that you can't afford to pay for like fire, theft, vandalism and most weather related events.

A word to the wise...

I know it is only September...

but Nov 15th will be upon us before you know it. Why is Nov 15th important?

That is the starting day when medicare recipients can change their health coverage. The period runs through Mar 31, 2009. Some folks may even want to switch from original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan.

If you are one of those folks, your day is almost here. These plans are offered by private insurers if you didn't know. They are regulated so you at least enjoy a breath of protection from the con artists.

Enrollment for Part D...

Prescription Drug plan starts on Nov 15th as well but only runs through Dec 31st. Don't confuse the two enrollment periods. Part D is not as long as the medical coverage portion.

According to a recent study...

it now costs, on average, $1.78 to withdraw cash from an ATM not owned by the bank with which you do business. If possible, always withdraw money only from an ATM in your bank's network.

Before  you walk out of the bank with your ATM card, be sure to ask where you can withdraw money without incurring the associated charges. The customer service rep for the bank should be able to tell you all of the locations.

Here's one for those who...

can't wake up in the morning even after that third cup of coffee. Replace the coffee with an apple or two. Research has shown apples are more efficient than caffeine at waking you up in the morning.

Do you burn more...

calories sleeping or watching TV? Don't laugh. That's all some of you do <LOL>. The answer:

Sleeping.

I don't know if this is...

100% correct but it sounds correct. The liquid in young coconuts can be used as a substitute for blood plasma. When my friend told me this little factoid, I was very surprised.

Here is some great...

news from the Energy Information Administration (EIA). The largest known reserves of oil is in an area called the Bakken. The Bakken is located in western North and South Dakota and eastern Montana.

The reseves are estimated at a little over 500 billion barrels with the oil being light, sweet crude. The cost to Americans will be $16 per barrel and the reserves have a life of 41 straight years.

The second largest reserve is located in the Rockies. It actually is bigger at something like 2 trillion barrels but it is oil shale and not crude like that found in Bakken.

We have more oil within our boundaries than all the other proven reserves on earth. Our dependency on OPEC can become a thing of the past.

Until next issue,

Tom Koziol
