Cut down on fat in canned soup...
by laying it on it's side in the refrigerator. The fat congeals and sticks to the top of the lid and it can be easily scraped off and thrown out. The soup alwasy seems to taste better (according to me).
Save money by carrying...
a small coin purse with you when you go out. Whenever you are tempted to buy something that is not absolutely necessary don't buy it. Instead put the amount of money it would have cost into your coin purse. That soda at the gas station, a pack of cookies, or maybe even a pair of shoes - resist it no matter what. After one month you will be shocked at how much money you have saved to either put towards a bill, or in savings.
To remove labels...
or sticky glue residue wipe with vinegar. Works like a champ so I'm told.
If you are like me and you use night lights...
here is a source of night light replacement bulbs. Head over to the aisle with the Christmas lights. Yes, I know, Christmas is over but the merchants didn’t stop selling the light bulbs.
Since it is still January, albeit the last day, some stores may still have Christmas lights on sale. If they do, buy a whole string of clear or white lights the same size as the bulbs that go in your night lights.
There are anywhere from 30 to 50 bulbs in a string. That way you will have 30 to 50 replacement bulbs for less than $5. Add the fact they last for years and you have a much cheaper bulb than buying the standard 3 bulbs for $1.79 per pack.
Probably obvious but what the heck...
To see if you need to water your houseplants, touch the surface of the soil with your finger. If you can see soil sticking to your finger, then you don't need to water the plant.
211 Access...
is available in the U.S. for services like these listed below. If you are not sure what services you need the counselor who answers your call will be happy to guide you after you explain the situation.
- Basic Human Needs Resource: food banks, clothing closets, shelters, rent assistance, utility assistance.
- Physical and Mental Health Resources: health insurance programs, Medicaid and Medicare, maternal health, Children's Health Insurance Program, medical information lines, crisis intervention services, support groups, counseling, drug and alcohol intervention and rehabilitation.
- Employment Supports: financial assistance, job training, transportation assistance, education programs.
- Support for Older Americans and Persons with Disabilities: adult day care, congregate meals, Meals on Wheels, respite care, home health care, transportation, homemaker services.
- Volunteer Opportunities and Donations
Many of these centers also act as crises hot lines for rape, abuse and suicide, so if you are calling for information and you are asked if your call is a crisis, please do not overstate your needs.

Google to the rescue...
for those of us in the U.S. who use the 411 service. Google's new 411 service is free, fast and easy to use. Call: 1-800-466-4411 and try it for yourself.
Pancake lovers like me...
can now enjoy a much healthier pancake. Simply substitute half the flour with oatmeal. To make the oats less coarse, mix them in a blender before adding to the flour. The oats add fiber, complex carbs (the kind that makes energy) and supposedly lowers your cholesterol. Flavor to taste.
Free energy saving...
advice, which means money saving as well, can be found at:

This is a US Dept of Energy cooperative site. I would imagine the tips are applicable no matter where you live.
Until next issue,
